Chronic stress has many undesirable side effects. The human body
is efficiently designed to withstand standard daily stresses.
However, chronic ongoing stress creates serious health problems
over time.
For example, stress and lack of sleep can double a man's risk of
developing diabetes regardless of age, body mass index, smoking,
family history, and physical activity level.

Similarly, the
European Heart Journal states that people who report
having highly stressful jobs are 70% more likely to develop coronary
heart disease than those who report no stress.

People who are stressed have higher levels of the stress hormone,
cortisol, in their bloodstreams. Chronic over-secretion of stress
hormones adversely effects brain function, especially memory. Too
much cortisol can prevent the brain from laying down  new
memories, or from accessing already existing memories. That's
why people get befuddled and confused in a severe crisis. The mind
goes blank because "the lines are down."

Chronic stress also interferes with sleep. During sleep, the hormone
called leptin is produced. Chronic sleep loss lowers the "appetite
control" hormone leptin. Thus, lower levels of leptin are associated
with obesity.

Stress also decreases the immune system's ability to fight off
disease. Ever noticed how you caught that cold or flu after a
particularly stressful week? The long term effects of stress make
you even more susceptible to more serious chronic, life threatening
conditions.

Stress is unavoidable. It can be either empowering or debilitating.
Fortunately, stress resilience can be learned.
